The Truth I Can Finally Tell My Younger Self

The Truth I Can Finally Tell My Younger Self

May 13, 2025 Kaleah LaRoche

It’s my birthday today. I sit alone by the sea, listening to the soft patter of rain on my truck camper roof, sipping coffee, and reflecting on a lifetime of lessons. I’ve made the journey from the Southwest to the Northwest, reconnecting with the wild evergreens and the voice of the ocean. But today isn’t a celebration—it’s a reckoning.

If I could speak to my younger self, I wouldn’t say, “Don’t worry, it all turns out okay.”
Because the truth is—life didn’t turn out the way I hoped it would.

I’ve endured heartbreak I never imagined. Watched dreams fade into dust. Spent years believing that the next turn in the road would lead to fulfillment, only to find more road, more waiting. Life didn’t follow the script I wrote when I was young. It didn’t lead to the fairy tale ending. It led here.

And what I’ve learned is this: there is no final destination. There is no “arrival.” Life is not a series of achievements or rewards. It’s a winding path of moments—of loss, beauty, breakdowns, and quiet reckonings. Everything is temporary: love, abundance, youth, success. And yet… there is something sacred in the surrender.

I would tell my younger self:
Let go of the striving. Let go of trying to be perfect, trying to earn love, trying to win at a game that was never meant to be won. You won’t find lasting peace in relationships, careers, or recognition. You’ll find it in the stillness. In the morning light. In the quiet understanding that you are already enough.

You’ll learn to choose solitude over noise. Peace over performance. And love—real love—starts from within.

So to my younger self, and maybe to you, dear reader:
Stop chasing the illusion of a perfect life. Live the truth of the one you have. Make peace with your heart. Be kind to your soul. This is the greatest wisdom I’ve gained: that our deepest longing isn’t for success—it’s for peace.

And if you’ve walked far, only to feel lost—know this:
You are not alone.
You never have been.
